Technology-Assignment 4-MM 3503-Lucas Sharp

 Technology

In today's society we have seen so many technological advancements. I can remember as a kid growing up in the early to mid 2000's there was not a lot of advanced tech. We did not have all of these smartphones, smart cars, voice activated devices, the list goes on and on. Our fun was playing outside and staying up late enough to watch Adult Swim. Now you see kids faces glued to an IPad wherever they go. All that to say that it is a good thing that we are progressing and will continue to progress as time marches on. Today, I am going to talk about two of not only my favorite technological advancements, but I think America in general, Netflix and Hulu.

   Netflix

First, we have Netflix, the most popular streaming service on the market. Netflix was founded in 1997, by Reed Hastings and Marc Rudolph. It is a subscription-based service that offers a plethora of movies and television shows. They even have started to produce their own movies, which I have seen a few and was quite impressed. They update there service on a regular basis, bringing in new films and shows to keep their costumers happy. There are a little over 73 million subscriptions just in the United States alone. There are three different plans that can be purchased which are on a monthly basis: basic ($8.99), standard ($13.99), and premium ($17.99). The biggest difference in the plans are that with standard you get HD, which basic does not, and with premium you get HD as well as Ultra HD. I think Netflix is one of the greatest inventions because at a relatively inexpensive price you can watch all kinds of things with your friends and family. They have international movies, family friendly movies, and you can watch it on any smart device wherever you go. One review from pcmag.com stated, "Although Netflix's streaming service started as a niche offshoot of the company's disc-mailing service, it is now the front-runner in the category, thanks to its reliable core catalog and some of the best original programming. Netflix also integrates excellent usability features across interfaces, allows offline downloads on mobile platforms, and features 4K content." These are all reasons why Netflix has got to be so popular.

Hulu

Now on to Hulu, I would say the second most popular streaming service. Hulu is now owned by The Walt Disney Company, and was established in 2006. It is also a subscription based service that offers many movies and television series for its' costumers. In my personal opinion having both Netflix and Hulu I think Hulu has a better selection of television series, especially for me, I like to watch a lot of cartoons and Hulu has some of the best. Something that I thought was a great marketing strategy was in 2017 Hulu with Live Television, meaning you can watch shows that are on the air as well as sports. They have had many ads with famous athletes such as Damian Lillard and Joel Embiid, which was brilliant on their part. There are four different plans that you can purchase that are all monthly: basic Hulu ($5.99), Hulu with no Ads ($11.99), Hulu + Live TV ($64.99), and Hulu + Live TV with no Ads ($70.99). There are also bundles that can allow you to purchase Hulu as well as the new streaming service Disney Plus, which I thought was a great idea. Hulu does not have nearly as many subscriptions as Netflix, but they still have racked up a total of nearly 38 million. Hulu like Netflix can be streamed on any smart device at any time. A review on pcmag.com stated, "Hulu is a dependable option for streaming new and classic shows as well as live TV on nearly every platform. It's a top choice among video streaming services." Hulu not only is affordable, but markets themselves in a brilliant manner.

It is amazing how far we have come with the ability to watch our favorite movies and television shows. We can literally watch them anywhere we go and at any time. I can remember when I was a kid having to order Netflix shows and movies through the mail on DVD. Both companies have grown into being superpowers when it comes to the streaming service arena. They are amazing, and I think they both have their pros and cons, but in the end it is really just preference. I really can't decide which I like more because I go to Netflix for the movies and Hulu for the television shows. I'm sure most of you have these services but, if you do not i recommend that you purchase at least one of them! They will have you up all night binge watching your favorite television shows procrastinating homework and not going to bed until 3am.
